Basel, Switzerland; 14th December 2023: Varda, the agtech startup founded by Yara, today announced its partnership with Pessl Instruments, the global manufacturer and leading provider of advanced agricultural technology solutions under the METOS® brand.

Varda’s Global FieldID™, which establishes a shared geospatial reference framework for the entire agricultural industry, will seamlessly integrate with the entirety of the METOS® portfolio – which covers a range of resources including weather stations, AI-powered insect traps and data loggers – to give farmers a range of data-powered insights on their land which have previously not been readily accessible.

The partnership will see Varda’s Global FieldID™ provide Pessl Instruments with field authentication. Varda assigns unique IDs to each agricultural land plot, creating a ‘QR code for fields’, delivered to users via an API. The unique ID for every field enhances interoperability and collaboration across the supply chain, making it easier for stakeholders to exchange data and for farmers to comply with increasing demand for transparency on their practices.

With a shared mission for a sustainable future, Pessl’s integration with Varda will empower the company to deliver farmers highly localized insights. This includes detailed weather information and soil moisture monitoring. These insights enable farmers to accurately report back to insurance companies and financial institutions with the precise information that they need.

Gottfried Pessl, CEO and founder at Pessl Instruments, commented: “Smart farming technologies have proven to be a tremendous helping hand in mitigating climate change effects. Far from being a passing trend, the integration of interconnected smart devices is rapidly evolving into a cornerstone of agriculture.

Implementing tools that ensure precise fertilizer application yields significant outcomes, not only in preserving soils but also in securing yields, and safeguarding water resources and the environment. Committed to providing the best for both farmers and the environment, forging a partnership with Varda was a straightforward choice. Both of our missions are aiding farmers in cost reduction, enhancing food security, optimizing inputs, and elevating overall field activities—all while maintaining environmental stewardship. Varda plays an important role in realizing these goals, and we enthusiastically embrace this collaboration and integration between our solutions," Mr. Pessl added.

Davide Ceper, CEO at Varda, commented: “We’re proud to be partnering with Pessl Instruments to empower farmers with a tool that will enable them to participate in a broader information ecosystem. The insights that our collaboration will provide can go a long way in supporting our shared goal of creating a nature-positive food system by helping farmers to access accurate data that will help grow their crops even more efficiently. We look forward to working with the team at Pessl Instruments to help drive change and make this vision a reality.”

Committed to achieving net-zero impact,  METOS® IoT solutions help reduce emissions, optimize farming and promote global food security. By empowering farmers with data-driven insights, the partnership will not only lower their expenses but also minimize environmental impact.
